Up the Gatineau! Current Volume

Volume 50

2024 Update from the editor of Up the Gatineau!

I am pleased to announce that Volume 50 of Up the Gatineau! was published in June 2024 and is available at many local retailers in the Valley or by contacting the Society directly at publications@gvhs.ca.

This year’s volume showcases the writings of four first-time and six returning contributors, plus two poems chosen by our poetry editor, Paull Leamen. This year two articles in Volume 50 are available in both English and French online. The first is “Early Settlement of the Upper Gatineau Valley: The 1840s” (Les débuts de la colonisation de la Haute-Gatineau : les années 1840 en français) by Martin Lamontagne (who provided both versions), and the second is “A Shanty Cook: Yvette Saumure Bénard” (Une cuisinière de chantier: Yvette Saumure Bénard en français) by Louise Schwartz.

I would also like to announce that Toby Sanger is this year’s winner of the Arthur Davison Prize for his outstanding article in 2023’s Volume 49. Congratulations! The judging panel also chose a new recipient of the Carol Martin Award. Beth Macfie is being recognized for her cumulative and sustained contribution to Up the Gatineau!, over a consecutive 28-year period. She plans to continue as our copy editor for Volume 51. Well done, Beth!
