A Man of Virtue and Talent
George B. Johnston was born in Masham, Que., in 1845. His father was a Johnston, his mother a Johnstone. During his life he was, at various times, a school teacher, a Sunday school teacher, a local preacher, a sketcher, a bookkeeper for J.R. Booth Lumber Company, a merchant at Lascelles and an ensign in the Wakefield Infantry Company of the Volunteer Militia. He was stated to be reliable, steady, energetic and "of exceptional moral character". But George Johnston had a special claim to fame. He was a superb penman and he made beautifully hand written visiting cards for J.R. Booth, among others, over 100 years ago.
