"Meet You at Dean's Bar at 4 O'clock Monday Morning"

— Could possibly have been the outcome of a bylaw enacted at a General Session of the West Hull Council on April 3, 1876 — and one had better keep a “clean mouth”

“It is hereby enacted and ordained that the bars of all inns, taverns and other places of public entertainment in this Municipality be closed from seven o'clock on Saturday until the following Monday at four o’clock in the morning. It is hereby ordered not to use any profane oaths and blasphemous and obscene language on roads, squares or in their vicinity.

Any person not complying with the provisions of this bylaw shall upon conviction thereof incur a fine of not less than three nor more than ten dollars and costs or imprisonment of from five to fifteen days."

and eight years later:

At a General Meeting of the Council held on July 7, 1884

A motion that the petition be accepted that the taverns should be closed from 11.00 pm Saturday to 5. am on Monday. Proceedings to be taken for contravention of the bylaw.

Researched and written by Patrick M.O. Evans
