Launch of Volume 50 Up the Gatineau! at the Fairbairn House
Fairbairn House, Wakefield, June 6, 2024
It was so fitting that the launch of Volume 50 of Up the Gatineau! took place on a spectacularly sunny day on the beautiful grounds of Fairbairn House in Wakefield. With over 100 people present, attendees were graced with an opening ceremony by Algonquin poet, storyteller, teacher and elder Albert Dumont. The first in-person awards gathering of the GVHS since 2019, Beth Macfie was awarded the Carol Martin Award for her long association with Up the Gatineau!, most recently as copy editor. Toby Sanger was presented with the Arthur Davison Prize for his article in Volume 49, “Orange in the Valley: The Reign and Remnants of the Orange Order in the Gatineau.”
More than a few stories from over half a century were chewed over as folks mingled over the dessert table, enjoyed the unveiling of the GVHS retrospective exhibit in the barn, and celebrated the accomplishments and contributions of so many people for 50 consecutive years of a top notch publication of local yore.
Happy 50th, Up the Gatineau!
