GVHS Mandate and Mission
The Gatineau Valley Historical Society's purpose is to promote matters of historical or heritage significance in the general area of the Gatineau Valley.
We are a federally registered not-for-profit society. As a voluntary organization, we achieve our mission through the work of people - executive, committees, members - and by influencing people. In 2012, our membership numbers approximately 300 persons and organizations.
Activities of the Gatineau Valley Historical Society include a program of monthly events with expert speakers on history or heritage topics, tours to points of historic interest, an annual Remembrance Day ceremony, and a fund-raising auction of antiques and collectibles, held in August of each year.
We produce a quarterly Newsletter (published on-line and sent to members) and an annual local history journal, Up the Gatineau! The Society's Archives contain an Image Bank with a collection of more than 7000 local historic photographs, along with books, genealogies, historic records and documents, census material and some local baptismal, marriage and burial records. The Society also owns and maintains the historic Chelsea Pioneer Cemetery. We work actively with local community and municipal organizations and other history and heritage groups in the Ottawa-Gatineau region.
This year, 2012, marks our 50th anniversary, and a series of special events is taking place throughout the year to mark the occasion. Visitors and new members are most welcome!
